The King of Carrot Flowers

This is the same flower from Saturday’s image. Good colors.

What is there to say about Neutral Milk Hotel that hasn’t already been said? Jeff Mangum changed lives with this album, and the legions of imitators prove his far-reaching influence. In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of the most important albums of the 90s, which is all the more interesting given that The Diary of Anne Frank was the main inspiration. The opening track, King of Carrot Flowers Part 1 is a barrage of imagery dealing with childhood innocence, family turmoil, and coming of age. While Mangum’s lyrics are often cryptic, this song is unambiguous in its intentions and places the listener right at the epicenter of the chaos as accordions celebrate your arrival. Great albums pull you in and leave you reeling, and this song is just the tip of the iceberg that is In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. If you haven’t heard it before, do yourself the favor. If you have heard it before, go back and take that ride again. Mangum may never release another album under the Neutral Milk Hotel moniker, but he doesn’t really have to - this album has and will continue to stand the test of time.

I love the shock of color (especially the color choice) and the cheerfulness of this image.

Once again, Anns and I show that we are truly light and dark respectively, because even with the oranges and the blues, I think this beautiful image is kind of depressing. It almost has a grave-like feel what with the flower lain down. Kind of like putting a flower down and remembering something makes the rest of the world around you somewhat blurry. Really nice setup, and I love the contrast between the clear flower and the rest of the shot.
