At the Chime of a City Clock

In 2003, I spent a month traveling through New Zealand. I can remember vividly walking down a street in Christchurch listening to Nick Drake’s Bryter Later, and thinking of the relative sterility and the accompanying feeling of isolation in urban areas. That feeling could, of course, also be due to these facts: 1) I was traveling alone, 2) it was winter, 3) I was listening to Nick Drake, and 4) I was freezing. Nonetheless, though I enjoyed Christchurch (and still believe New Zealand to be the most amazing place on the planet), urban areas always give me that feeling. This image of downtown Minneapolis captures that feeling with the simple palette and the dearth of color compared to the greens, oranges and blues I’m flooded with here on Catalina.
My friend Nora and I left yesterday (I posted this image on Wednesday) for close to a 60-mile kayak expedition as we paddle around the entire Catalina Island. I hope to capture plenty of the adventure on film as we journey, so hopefully I’ll have some great pictures to post starting Sunday. I’m crossing my fingers so that we can see some green sea turtles, some great white sharks, and some Mola molas, though I expect to see none of them…
