Shark!

This was my favorite photo from this past weekend’s dive trip to San Clemente Island. It was at a spot called Cave 85 near Pyramid Head on the south tip of the island, and we saw it in the first 5 minutes of our dive at about 80 feet.
She is a beautiful, healthy, full-grown smalltooth sand tiger shark. I originally believed this to be a relatively common soupfin shark, but in fact this was a truly spectacular encounter. According to one shark expert, this may be the first time this species has ever been encountered by a diver in California! While common in many other areas, the smalltooth sand tiger shark is realtively unheard of in California, hence the misidentification. She sat with us for 12 minutes, swimming slow loops around us. The best part of the whole trip in the first few minutes!!!
I know that was you that wrote that, Victor, you turd.
what?! i’d be scared s@#$less if i saw this swimming with me.. :D that is one great capture though.. :)
i agree with the turd. i was just at mystic seaport and seeing all those dilapidated boats made me feel really bad for all those out of work whalers. ”Let’s go Whalers!”
