Fashioning Emotions to a Pattern

After my last post, which I was particularly happy with, I decided to make an effort to think on a smaller scale on my next photographic odyssey. I got stuck in a rut trying to capture these amazing “big picture” shots of Catalina, and it drained me of my motivation to shoot. For those of you not familiar with my employment circumstances, I live in one of the most beautiful places in the country, but I see the same square mile day in and day out because I live, work, and eat in the same place. Well, today I had about an hour to get out and shoot, and I had what is probably the most productive hour of photography in my life. I have at least 5 photos I am very excited about, which is about 4 more than I usually expect from a full day photo shoot (let alone just an hour!).
This image is not one of the best from my day, though I’m very pleased with it. I would expect most people to prefer more vivid colors, but I love the subdued tones and strong whites from the flower. The layout of stones is actually how part of the road in Avalon is paved…
Yet another highly anticipated 2007 release is Bright Eyes’ Cassadaga. Conor Oberst is no musical genius, but he crafts beautiful pop songs that are perfect for those of us prone to low lows and high highs. Reinvent the Wheel is off of the Four Winds EP, released in advance of the upcoming Cassadaga. Featuring more production and more instrumentation than the tracks on 2005’s I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning LP, it’s still catchy in the characteristic Bright Eyes vein of simple folk-pop songs.
By the way, if you liked the one song I posted a few weeks ago and still haven’t gotten the new Menomena album Friend and Foe yet, do yourself the favor. It continues to impress and grow on me with every listen. Unexpected brilliance!
