Dead Fingers to the Ground

Continuing with my week of black and white landscape shots, this is a dead cedar tree up behind my parents’ house. This image bears a remarkable resemblance to another shot I took on Catalina. While I captured this tree in a variety of different compositions, I eventually went with this one because I found it so interesting that I could present a similar, yet unique image from hundreds of miles away. I also like that in the other image, the branches seem to want to reach to the sky, and in this one, the tree wants to hold on to the ground. I am quite pleased with this one.

While I probably wouldn’t go as far as the rest of the blogosphere in naming the Silversun Pickups the 8th best band in America, I did love a few tracks off of their 2006 release Carnavas enough to place one at #13 on my Favorites of the Year list. The Pickups are a rock band, and they aren’t afraid to scream into the microphone and make some noise. My favorite track from Carnavas, Lazy Eye, starts off with some cleanly strummed power chords before building momentum towards the middle of the song. Utilizing some distant reverb and distortion, the band hints at the release that comes at the 2:45 mark… and songwriter Brian Aubert sounds angry. If you’re bored of Pearl Jam rehashing the same formula over again but still miss ’90s rock, the Silversun Pickups is a great place to start.

Favorites of 2006:
#16: Islands - Rough Gem
#15: The Decemberists - The Crane Wife 3
#14: Headlights - Owl Eyes
#13: Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye

I hadn’t read the end of your description yet when I decided that my favorite thing about this image in contrast with the catalina one is that when next to each other - they really do oppose each other well, one reaching up and one reaching down. this image is so engaging because of hte unusual position of the tree. really nice shot.
